The Dorchester County Historical Society seeks applicants for an internship that will provide experience in a museum setting surrounded by local history.
The Dorchester County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that serves to protect, preserve, and share local history. Our mission is “to inspire and support research, interpretation, education, and appreciation of the folklore, history, culture, and heritage of Dorchester County, Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay region.” We operate on a historic property within a museum facility, and we provide programs and events to encourage visitors to learn more about our area.
The intern will learn the ins and outs of operating our museum and society, working closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees to gain hands-on experience with original artifacts, documents, and resources. They will develop skills in researching, organizing exhibits, communicating with visitors, formulating outreach strategies, scanning original documents, and similar tasks. After coordinating with the Director and Trustees, the intern will have a consistent schedule with assigned tasks to complete, both independently and with others.

Hours: Monday–Friday preferred, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; with occasional opportunities for evening and weekend experience.

Office Assistant Position
Position Details:

Schedule: Three days per week (Saturdays required, other scheduled days to be determined upon hiring). 18-24 hours per week. Part-time position.

Facility Hours of Operation: Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with occasional special events or programs extending beyond open hours that are planned in advance.

Able to communicate well with other staff, volunteers, and visitors. (This includes being comfortable greeting people who come in, answering phone calls, and responding to email messages.)

Able to work well both independently and with others. (Shows initiative and can collaborate and follow instructions.)

Able to assist with office-related tasks, such as keeping clear paper and computer records, filing items alphabetically or chronologically, and utilizing the basic features of Microsoft programs like Word and Excel.

Able to provide comprehensive guided tours of our museum facility and historic site to visitors. (Will be instructed on the information after being hired.)

Able to assist with exhibit and event preparations, which may involve contributing ideas for displays or setups, arranging fragile artifacts and equipment, and formulating design ideas for advertisements.
Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent. Special consideration given to those with higher education.

Able to go up and down stairs and lift objects up to 50 pounds. (Some tasks, such as giving tours of our historic house or locating various artifacts in our collection, involve going up and down stairs.)
